Researchers including, I believe, Martin White, professor of public health at Newcastle University, have published some research in the BMJ comparing recipes offered by “TV chefs”, including Jamie Oliver, Nigella Lawson and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, with supermarket ready meals. And despite their disclaimer that they’re not knocking them, they clearly are having a knock at these TV chefs.
Now I have a lot of time for Jamie Oliver (although not his bloody omnipresence*) and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall. I use their recipes a lot. And I think a lot more of the families (and couples and singles) who don’t currently take care with their food should do the same.
So thanks a bunch Prof. White et. al. Given the wide media interest (and I bet you weren’t astonished by that), I’m sure a bunch of people were validated into continuing with the easy, expensive, planet-harming ready-meals.
I know it’s difficult justifying your salary, reputation, tenure, whatever, but come on!
* I went to buy some seeds for the herb garden and there was a Jamie Oliver wooden box plus herb seeds on sale, for heaven’s sake!
