This morning’s example involved gates and bars. Semi-basement windows often have burglar bars. But if they are your only alternative exit, they should have an unlockable section. In a semi-basement flat with no access to the ground floor, you have to be even more thoughtful. If a metal gate has been fitted across your door or your porch, then you need to think very, very carefully about your fire escape plan.
